Luster arrived in Unova in Kanoko Town. Using Skarmory, he flew to the opening to the underground water vein in search of Steel Pokémon. While searching for Pokémon, he found a Drilbur. Hearing it evolved into the Ground/Steel Pokémon Excadrill. He used Skaromy to subdue the mole Pokémon and caught it.
After depositing Skarmory with the rest of his Pokémon, Luster challenged the Striaton City Gym Leader, Chili, to a battle. Using Drilbur's Mudslap attack, Luster was able to defeat Chili to earn his first Gym Badge. Luster continued on to Route 3 to train his Drilbur. He soon entered Nacrene City to challenge Aloe for his second Gym Badge. Drilbur barely defeated her Watchog to earn the second Badge. After his victory, Luster continued west through Pinwheel Forest to continue training. About a week later, he entered Castelia City to challenge Arty to a Gym Battle. Drilbur defeated Arty's Leavanny. After the battle, Drilbur evolved into Excadrill.
